Amarillo, TX, The Big Texan Steak Ranch and Motel

I don't know what is weirder, a Yankee at The Grand Ole Opry, or a Vegetarian at The Big Texan Steak Ranch and Motel. We didn't stay long in Amarillo, but from what I could tell, most of the restaurants were chains. Given that choice, a big raucous Texan joint seemed like a no brainer.

The truth was that this place was part theater, a tourist attraction not unlike Wall Drug. But when you have two young boys, theatrical hyperbole can be educational, and I guess they have some idea of what stereotypical Texas is like now.

Texan musicians played any song with the word Texas in it. Cowboy Hats were everywhere. Anyone who could eat a 72oz steak could get it for free (someone succeeded while we were there, to great fanfare).

There is a guy on that pedestal, behind the cameras, under the one hour timer, eating a 72oz steak.

This is what a vegetarian eats in a steak house.
